Enrico Letta on Finishing the Single Market: Savings, Investment and Europe’s Competitiveness Race

In the first Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence COMPETE Podcast, Enrico Letta, former Italian Prime Minister and author of the landmark report on the future of the Single Market, returns to discuss how far Europe has come since he presented his “Matrix” for a One Europe Act to the informal European Council in February. That plan became the One Europe, One Market Roadmap, with a set of concrete initiatives due by the end of 2027. So how is it going?

Recorded in Dublin, the conversation turns to the Savings and Investment Union: what it is, what it will take to complete it, and why mobilising Europe’s savings is central to a credible EU industrial policy. Letta also responds to the growing backlash against AI, from opposition to data centres to fears about job losses and models going rogue, and asks whether the case for AI as an engine of European competitiveness still holds. Finally, with Ireland holding the Council Presidency and competitiveness among its top priorities, he considers how much one member state can really achieve in six months.
